About Bleeding Pages
Bleeding Pages is an independent academic publishing house and literary magazine founded in 2026 to bridge scholarly peer review and high-calibre literary creation across South Asia and global literature.
1. The Institutional Need
A comprehensive survey of 32 literary and scholarly magazines in India revealed three structural deficiencies in current publishing:
- Uncompensated Labour: Over 90% of contemporary Indian literary outlets pay zero honoraria to writers, relying on unremunerated creative production.
- Opacity of Editorial Decisions: Submissions are routinely accepted or rejected via closed email channels with no published turnaround times or transparent rubrics.
- Balkanized Tracks: Outlets either pursue academic peer review in dry isolation or publish uncurated creative work, failing to bring critical scholarship and creative verse under one rigorous masthead.
Bleeding Pages addresses these deficits by operating two distinctly labeled tracks under one masthead, paying published contributors funded through institutional subscriptions, and enforcing double-blind peer review for all research articles.
2. Two Distinct Tracks Under One Masthead
We strictly preserve the boundary between scholarly inquiry and creative expression:
- The Scholarly Track: Research articles, translation studies, critical theoretical essays, and academic book reviews. All items undergo double-blind peer review and are permanently deposited with Crossref DOIs.
- The Creative Track: Poetry suites, short fiction, creative nonfiction, translation features, and visual art essays. Curated directly by our section editors with published editorial standards.
3. The Revenue Firewall & Open Access
Published research in Bleeding Pages is permanently open access. We reject the Article Processing Charge (APC) model that forces scholars to buy their way into print. Revenue is derived strictly from reader memberships, institutional library subscriptions, course-pack licensing, and print anthologies.
Our database and editorial systems physically isolate author payment and membership records from peer reviewers and section editors. It is structurally impossible for financial status or subscription purchase to influence an editorial decision.
4. Multilingual & Translation-First Ethos
We recognize translation as a primary creative and scholarly discipline. We support full Unicode typography for major Indic scripts including Devanagari, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, and Urdu, offering a synchronized side-by-side reading layout that presents the source script alongside the translation.
